News: Music-Theater Piece Based on Whitman's "Song of Myself" Performs Around the City [UPDATED 5/30]

International performing artists collective Compagnia dé Colombari will perform music-theater piece More or Less I Am, a work drawn entirely from Walt Whitman's momentously significant poem "Song of Myself," on Saturday, May 18, 2019, to celebrate Whitman's 200th birthday. The first in a series of performances, the one-hour More or Less I Am is conceived and directed by Karin Coonrod and will feature original music by Colin Jacobsen, Kyle Sanna, Eric Jacobsen, and Alex Sopp along with audience interaction.

The performance is free and open to the public and will take place at the Brooklyn Public Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, at 2:30pm.

Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 7:30 pm at Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn. This performance will feature special guest-poet Jason Koo.

Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 7:30 pm at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe (126 Crosby Street, Manhattan). Tickets for this benefit performance are $15 and are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/compagnia-de-colombari-presents-more-or-less-i-am-tickets-61236004538. 100% of proceeds go directly to supporting the missions of both Housing Works and Colombari. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a social enterprise raising money to fund lifesaving services for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. his performance will feature special guest-poet Jason Koo.

Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 9:30 pm at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St, Manhattan, NYC). This performance will feature special guest-poet Carl Hancock Rux. Doors open at 9 pm, and tickets are $20. Thursday, May 30, 2019 at at 7 pm at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, Roosevelt Island. This performance will feature special guest-poets Mark Doty and Ramya Ramana.

Friday, May 31, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the Whitman Birthplace (246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station, NY), with a suggested $5 donation. This performance will feature special guest-poet Claire White.

Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 2:30 pm at the Reading Room, Bryant Park, Manhattan. This performance is FREE and will feature local poet Angela O'Donnell.
