Review: "Tiger Tail" Brings the Bayou to the Battery

Image
Tiger Tail Written by Tennessee Williams Directed by Geoffrey Horne Presented by Shakespeare Downtown at Castle Clinton Battery Park, Manhattan, NYC June 12-22, 2025 Billie Andersson. Photo by Amy Goossens. One might associate Tennessee Williams, whose work is full of characters who are trapped–often in inadequate domestic spaces, relationships, or both–with claustrophobic enclosure rather than the openness, even expansiveness, of outdoor theater. However, in bringing Williams's rarely performed Tiger Tail to Battery Park's Castle Clinton, Shakespeare Downtown demonstrates that the work loses none of its sweaty intensity in the move to the open air. The forerunners of Tiger Tail are a pair of Williams one-acts, 27 Wagons Full of Cotton (1946) and The Long Stay Cut Short (1946), which provided the basis for the Williams-penned and Elia Kazan-directed film Baby Doll (1956), which itself Williams later adapted into Tiger Tail , published in 1978. This textual history introduce...

Review: Shakespeare Downtown’s “Macbeth” a True Ensemble Piece

Image
Macbeth Written by William Shakespeare Co-directed by Geoffrey Horne and Alec Baldwin Presented by Shakespeare Downtown at Castle Clinton National Monument The Battery (Battery Park), Manhattan, NYC June 13-23, 2024 Tickets are free and available at the door of Castle Clinton National Monument at the Battery at 5:45 p.m. on the day of the performance. Billie Andersson & Alfredo Diaz. Photo by Amy Goossens While Shakespeare’s tragedies generally encourage focus around one (or two) tragic figures, Shakespeare Downtown’s Macbeth , directed by Geoffrey Horne and Alec Baldwin, cogently reminds that, like the comedies, they are truly ensemble pieces necessitating a large and adept cast to effectively tell their stories. In a production such as this (indeed, with Shakespeare in general), with very minimal set and other effects at its disposal, the actors must do the lion’s share of work to make it a success. Alfredo Diaz’s Macbeth and Billie Andersson’s Lady Macbeth certainly shone ...

Review: The Story is Tragic But the Atmosphere is Wonderful in Shakespeare Downtown’s “The Lady of the Camellias”

Image
The Lady of the Camellias Written by Alexandre Dumas fils; new adaptation by Billie Andersson Directed by Geoffrey Horne Presented by Shakespeare Downtown  at  Castle Clinton National Monument The Battery (Battery Park), Manhattan, NYC June 15 - June 25, 2023 Billie Andersson. Photo by Amy Goosens The tragically fated love of the consumptive courtesan Marguerite Gautier (Billie Andersson) and the young bourgeois Armand Duval (Zack Ignoffo) takes center stage amid the bucolic setting of the open-air Castle Clinton in the Battery in Shakespeare Downtown’s free production of The Lady of the Camellias . Combining dialogue from Alexandre Dumas fils’ novel with text from the libretto of La Traviata , the new adaptation chronicles the brief but intense love story of Marguerite and Armand, doomed from the start by Marguerite’s illness and then later on by Armand’s father. While the believability of the lovers’ relationship is occasionally hampered by overly long speeches ...

Billie Andersson. Photo by Amy Goosens. Lower Manhattan’s Shakespeare Downtown , now in its seventh season of producing quality classical theatre accessible to everyone including, including Romeo and Juliet (2016), Richard III (2017), A Midsummer Night's Dream (2018), Hamlet (2019), The Three Sisters (2021), and Saint Joan (2022; read our review here ), will present a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas fils' The Lady of the Camellias this June. Adapted by Billie Andersson, The Lady of the Camellias combines dialogue from Dumas’s novel (considerably different from Dumas’s stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera La Traviata .  Set in mid-19th century France, this new adaptation, directed by Geoffrey Horne, sees a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (Billie Andersson) and nicknamed “The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her l...

Review: "Saint Joan" Displays Her Virtues in Lower Manhattan

Image
Saint Joan Written by George Bernard Shaw Directed by Geoffrey Horne Presented by Shakespeare Downtown at Castle Clinton 26 Wall St., Manhattan, NYC June 16-26, 2022 Billie Andersson as Joan. Photo by Amy Goossens George Bernard Shaw's 1923 drama Saint Joan , chronicling the exploits of the fifteenth-century Jeanne d'Arc during the Hundred Years' War, premiered (in New York City, as it happens) a few years after the eponymous Joan's canonization by the Catholic Church. Just shy of the play's 100th anniversary, NYC's Shakespeare Downtown theater company brings a revival to Battery Park's Castle Clinton. The production is presented free to the public, and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at 5:45 pm on the day of each performance, which begins at 6:30 pm.   Saint Joan begins in 1429 with an argument between Captain Robert de Baudricourt (George Eve) and his steward (Davide di Cagno-Hagen) over a lack of eggs. The latter blames a curse...
