Review: "Bad Practices" Make Great Theater

Image
Bad Practices: Doctors vs. Lawyers This May Sting Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert and Make Them All Pay Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing at the Chain Theatre 312 W 36th St., Floors 3 and 4, Manhattan, NYC September 24-October 4, 2026 Matthew Sanders. Courtesy of Spin Cycle. It is one of those fruitful coincidences that hybrid theater company Thirdwing's new productions, This May Sting and Make Them All Pay , playing in repertory under the umbrella Bad Practices: Doctors vs. Lawyers , made their debut the same week that HBO series Last Week Tonight delved into the many misdeeds of UnitedHealthcare, examining some of the same issues, such as coding based on profitability rather than need and algorithms deciding when or if people receive care, that populate these plays. This May Sting focuses on the doctors side of Bad Practices ' subtitle, and Make Them All Pay (suitable as a slogan for insurance companies as well as legal...

Image
Matthew Sanders in This May Sting Everyone's favorite TV professionals, doctors and lawyers, step onto the live stage, or actually two of them, for This May Sting and Make Them All Pay , set to run simultaneously on the 3rd and 4th floor of The Chain Theatre in midtown beginning September 22nd. As if the doctors and lawyers are forced to share the same office building, audiences can take the elevator trip to see both plays on the same night, or come back at different times over the run. Tickets are available at www.thirdwing.info . This May Sting  (the doctors): Loud snoring is harming an Ohio woman's marriage (okay, so maybe it wasn't so great to begin with). But after she seeks care from her local otolaryngologist, her chronic nosebleeds begin. As they worsen and worsen, no one can figure out what went wrong. Sitting “in the doctor's office” with the characters on stage, can you decide who's to blame? Make Them All Pay  (the lawyers): A broke law firm finally get...

Review: "The Animals Speak" Has the Last Word in Thirdwing's Disney Trilogy

Image
A Venomous Color, Part Three: The Animals Speak By Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E 3rd St., Manhattan, NYC August 5-17, 2025 Ginger Kearns, Adam Griffith, Cameron Darwin Bossert, & Cian Genaro. Photo by Hunter Canning The Animals Speak , the final installment in Cameron Darwin Bossert's outstanding Disney-centered trilogy A Venomous Color , which began with The Fairest in 2021, followed by Burbank the next year, is the first play of the trilogy to be set outside the workplace. The Animals Speak , making its world premiere at the wild project, takes place on a 1941 trip to Brazil, Argentina, and Chile sponsored by the U.S. government, which sent Walt Disney, his wife, Lillian, and a group of Disney artists on a goodwill tour intended to counter fascist and Nazi influence. It quickly emerges in Bossert's play, though, that leaving the workplace several thousand miles behind does not mean that Walt (Cameron Darwin Bossert) can leave w...

Review: "United Nations: The Other West" is a Welcome Addition to Thirdwing's U.N.-iverse

Image
United Nations: The Other West Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing in association with Out of the Box Theatrics at 154 on Christopher 154 Christopher St., Manhattan, NYC November 21-December 10, 2023 Matthew Sanders, Wesli Spencer, and Yelena Shmulenson. Photo by Valerie Terranova While the U.N. diplomats and functionaries in Thirdwing's United Nations series may not often be very happy to be there, we are thrilled to be back in their company with the latest entry, The Other West . One might think of The Other West , written and directed by Thirdwing founder Cameron Darwin Bossert, as a workplace comedy with a global scope and an astute satirical edge. Thirdwing is a hybrid theater, streaming, and events company that offers monthly and yearly subscription options; its United Nations series began with the Pale Cast of Thought (2020) web series and the stage play The Border and the Coast (2022; you can read our review here ), and the theatrical...

Review: "Vermont" Shows Us that (Wo)Man Cannot Live by Peyote Tea and Sexual Liberation Alone

Image
Vermont Written and directed by Rachel Carey Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E. 3rd Street, Manhattan, NYC July 18-30, 2023 Zachary Speigel, Sadithi De Zilva, and Rob Riordan. Photo by Valerie Terranova "[H]ow do you not become what you hate?" asks the character Mina (a splendid Sadithi De Zilva) deep into Rachel Carey's new play, Vermont . This question is essential not only for Mina and others at the small commune where Vermont takes place but also to the play as a whole, an absorbing comic exploration of how we define personal happiness as well as our place in and responsibility to larger communities. Vermont is the most recent live production from hybrid theater and streaming company Thirdwing. Patrons can purchase either tickets to Vermont only or a 1-year membership to Thirdwing for $49 (or $4.99/month), which includes 2 tickets to the show, 1 ticket to each upcoming production, and access to all content on its streaming platform. Membership in Ver...

Review: "Television" is Appointment Viewing

Image
Television Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E. 3rd Street, Manhattan, NYC April 6-22, 2023 Aprella Godfrey Barule in Television. Photo by Valerie Terranova. Mass media, for better and worse, helps to create what scholar Benedict Anderson termed imagined communities, which foster the perspective of belonging to a group, such as a nation, that includes many people one doesn't know and will never actually meet. Television , the new play from the reliably compelling Cameron Darwin Bossert, imagines what happens when the televisual media consumed by a community is produced by that same, actual community. Television is presented by Thirdwing, a hybrid theater and streaming company founded by Bossert with a subscription model offering new content every month, either online, in-person, or both, and tickets to the show are available on an individual basis or as part of a monthly subscription or a yearly subscription or non-subscr...

A Venomous Color: Burbank Written by Cameron Darwin Bossert Directed by Thirdwing Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E. 3rd Street, Manhattan, NYC September 6-18, 2022 L to R: Kelley Lord, Ryan Blackwell, and Cameron Darwin Bossert. Photo by Valerie Terranova Burbank , making its world premiere at the wild project, marks the fourth onstage production from Thirdwing, founded by Artistic Director and Burbank playwright Cameron Darwin Bossert. As a hybrid streaming theater company, Thirdwing creates both streaming and in-person offerings, and Burbank , revised and expanded from an earlier streaming version, is the second full-length in-person play in the series A Venomous Color , which focuses on Walt Disney Studios from 1935 through 1941. The first onstage show in A Venomous Color was the outstanding The Fairest , adapted for streaming as Disney Girls , which examined Disney's "Nunnery," a department made up exclusively of women painters and inkers, as they ...

Review: We Stand Together in Our Praise of "The United Nations: The Border and the Coast"

Image
The United Nations: The Border and the Coast Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E 3rd St., Manhattan, NYC April 5-17, 2022 Imagine petty office politics and stultifying bureaucracy, but blown up to an international scale: this is the world that writer and director Cameron Darwin Bossert explores in hybrid theater company Thirdwing's superb new live production The United Nations: The Border and the Coast . With The Border and the Coast , on the heels of the equally excellent multi-part A Venomous Color , Bossert continues to impress, with a look at the United Nations as a place in which banality and intrigue and the personal and global collide, to enthralling effect. Thirdwing's hybrid digital and live-on-stage model presents The Border and the Coast in conjunction with a digital series, The United Nations: Pale Cast of Thought , featuring one of the live production's characters, German diplomat Rudolph Schmid (Ma...

Review: Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears the Mouse Ears in "A Venomous Color: Burbank (Act 2)"

A Venomous Color: Burbank (Act 2) Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing via its streaming service The hybrid model at the core of Thirdwing, founded by Artistic Director Cameron Darwin Bossert, embraces both live and streaming theater productions. The first act of Thirdwing's streaming A Venomous Color: Burbank extended the narrative begun by its fantastic in-person show A Venomous Color: The Fairest , which, in its run at  the wild project , explored Disney's "Nunnery," a department made up exclusively of women painters and inkers, as they worked to complete Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs  (you can read our  review here ). The four-episode first act of Burbank –written and directed, like The Fairest , by Bossert and functioning as a sequel and companion piece to The Fairest without requiring having seen the earlier play–moves from The Nunnery to the male environs of Walt Disney and his animators as it continues a captivating explo...

Review: In "A Venomous Color: Burbank (Act 1)," Mickey's Shorts May Be Red, But He's No Commie

A Venomous Color: Burbank (Act 1) Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing via its streaming service In an in-person run at the wild project earlier this fall, Thirdwing's terrific A Venomous Color: The Fairest explored Disney's "Nunnery," its sex-segregated department of women painters and inkers, as they worked to complete Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (you can read our review here ). Thirdwing is dedicated to a hybrid model that embraces both live and streaming theater productions; and the entire first act of A Venomous Color: Burbank , which functions as sequel and companion piece to The Fairest but does not require having seen the earlier play to be enjoyed, is now available on Thirdwing's streaming service (starting at $4.99 per month or $49 per year, subscriptions include access to the streaming platform and tickets to live shows; see Thirdwing's site for details of available membership packages). Review: Don't Sleep on Snow White-Era Disney Tale "A Venomous Color Part 1: The Fairest"

A Venomous Color Part 1: The Fairest Written and directed by Cameron Darwin Bossert Presented by Thirdwing at the wild project 195 E 3rd St., Manhattan, NYC October 19-24, 2021 Sivan Gordon-Buxbaum as Frances. Courtesy Karen Greco PR As entertainment sites across the internet catalog which Disney-owned superhero films slated for release in 2022 and 2023 will now be coming out slightly later in 2022 and 2023, A Venomous Color Part 1: The Fairest , a new play written and directed by theater company Thirdwing's founder and Artistic Director Cameron Darwin Bossert, takes audiences back to a time before Disney dominated the entertainment industry—1937, to be exact—for a richly drawn and thoroughly absorbing look at the women in Disney's ink and paint department as they crunch to finish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs . Thirdwing's innovative focus on both live and streaming theater means that the multi-episode part 2 of A Venomous Color , subtitled Burbank and dealing with the...

Review: A Stream of "Female Genius"

Image
The Female Genius Written by Rachel Carey Directed by Cameron Bossert Presented by the wild project and Thirdwing Available at www.thirdwing.watch Krysten Wagner and Cameron Bossert. Photo courtesy Karen Greco PR. Although a coincidence, it seems fitting that the debut offering from digital theater company Thirdwing should be structured around artists' struggles. Thirdwing is designed to develop plays both for streaming and for the live stage, and it launched just prior to the COVID-19 lockdowns, with its first live play, The Female Genius , written by Rachel Carey and scheduled to run at the wild project in mid-April. This, of course, did not happen. Happily, thanks to Thirdwing's operational model, audiences can still experience Carey’s Genius through the company's streaming platform. The play, designed to work well for both home and stage viewing, was filmed in styles that recall 50s and 60s teleplays and is presented in partnership with the wild project, to which half...
