News: Thirdwing Pits Doctors vs. Lawyers in 2 Repertory Comedies Beginning September 22nd

This May Sting (the doctors): Loud snoring is harming an Ohio woman's marriage (okay, so maybe it wasn't so great to begin with). But after she seeks care from her local otolaryngologist, her chronic nosebleeds begin. As they worsen and worsen, no one can figure out what went wrong. Sitting “in the doctor's office” with the characters on stage, can you decide who's to blame?
Make Them All Pay (the lawyers): A broke law firm finally gets to sue the big county hospital, going toe-to-toe with the CEO. But when an estranged former legal associate pays a visit, she brings information that may turn the case into something they can't handle. The play questions the ethics of certain business models in the hospital system.
Created by acclaimed playwright Cameron Darwin Bossert (Burbank, The Other West), these two comedies are part of Thirdwing’s Bad Practices series that takes aim at the American medical and legal systems with humor. It tackles many problems including those caused by private equity and other money interests.
The Bad Practices stage plays are paired with a sitcom series featuring the characters set to stream on Thirdwing's digital platform later this month. The plays and series are each stand-alone, able to be viewed together or without each other; no “homework” required to understand any of the stories. Minisodes of the show have become a viral sensation on Instagram with over 1.9 million views. They can be watched by visiting @thirdwingltd.
Tickets are $45 to each show at www.thirdwing.info. Patrons who purchase tickets for both live shows will receive a free digital download of the TV series, which is available for purchase separately for $11.99.
But Thirdwing's ultimate mission is sustainable affordability. Launched in January 2020, Thirdwing is a hybrid theater and streaming company taking inspiration from the classic mid-century teleplays pioneered by Paddy Chayefsky and Harold Pinter. Their mission is to bridge theater and film to tell expansive, world-building stories and make traditional in-person theatergoing more affordable with a subscription model offering new content every month, either online, in-person, or both.
In 2020 Thirdwing was noted by AM New York as among those “keeping theater alive,” having launched the first fully-staged “virtual play” of the pandemic, The Female Genius, by Rachel Carey, written and designed in episodes to be binged online. One of the episodes was expanded into a live stage play called The Disciple, also by Carey, and performed at The Wild Project in 2021. In 2022 Laura Collins Hughes of the New York Times called Bossert's play, Burbank, “Remarkable… Warm and alive, it’s layered with nuance as it captures the anxiety that can grip a workplace amid a labor struggle — and the ruthlessness that can ensue on all sides.”
“Great TV used to be like theater for everyone,” says Bossert. “All in the Family was like everybody watching a play in their living rooms, for free. And great theater used to be not so expensive. So we're trying to take both things, use a bit of retro magic, and bridge that gap to make it easy and fun for people to come out to live stuff. We've been having staged reading parties for almost three years to get the comedy and characters just right. Those have been selling out almost every single time, so I think we're ready to bring it to more people.”
