News: Image Quilt Dance Theater Announces Performances of "Sketches from the Edge of Flamenco"

Image Quilt Dance Theater has announced upcoming performances of Sketches from the Edge of Flamenco, a theatrical work written and directed by Omonike Akinyemi, two-time New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow. The production premiered in December 2025 and continues its monthly run through March 24, 2026, with the next performance on Sunday, January 20, 2026 at 16 Cowries Space at Rodney’s, 1118 First Avenue, New York, NY.

Blending live performance, flamenco, theater, film, and surreal humor, Sketches from the Edge of Flamenco unfolds through a series of emotionally charged vignettes exploring identity, power, desire, and cultural dissonance. Flamenco is treated not as tradition alone, but as a volatile, contemporary language. Food and drinks are available for purchase at the bar, creating an intimate, cabaret-style experience.

The January 20, 2026 performance features live, on-stage performances by Omonike Akinyemi, Khalid Gambino, and Alexandre Lumbala. The sketches include:

Rumba Oficina — A stressed-out but deeply optimistic stockbroker announces she has sold her shares, plunging her office into comedic chaos.

The Tangos — Friends gather at a café to do flamenco when a young woman recognizes her ex and seeks “flamenco therapy.”

Las Comadres Fechiceras — Inspired by a Sephardic folktale, a nanny in Medieval Spain contemplates abducting her employer’s baby.

I Feel Pretty Too, Bitch — A flamenco dancer discovers her prized dress was delivered to a neighbor, sparking a fierce meditation on beauty and identity.

Intergalactica — A surreal corporate scheme recruits participants to live “worry-free”... inside a bottle.

The creative team includes Omonike Akinyemi (writer and director), live performances by Omonike Akinyemi, Khalid Gambino, and Alexandre Lumbala; on-screen Performances by Dwayne Beach, Amiere Bell, Aliesha Bryan, Desiree Carlson, Beth Jacobs, Kevin LaMarr Jones, Anna Krezel, La Rosaline, Yurika Ono, Katia Flores, Rebekah Joann Guerra, Orisa Gutierrez, and Jose Raul Mangual; music by Ana-Maria Ruimonte, Alan Lewine, and The Temptations; and animation by Koi Ren.

Tickets are $35 (includes $20 cover for refreshments) and may be purchased at https://imagequilt.com.
