News: Teatro Círculo Annoucnes CALLBACKseries and DANCEseries 2023 Season

Teatro Círculo, one of the main bilingual Latino theatre companies in New York City, will begin its 2023 Season in February with its CALLBACKseries and DANCEseries at the Chain Theatre in Manhattan (312 West 36th St., 3rd floor).

For 28 years, Teatro Círculo has been presenting Spanish Golden Age theater plays and contemporary theater works in New York City. With its CALLBACKseries, which began in 2015, and its DANCEseries, which began in 2017, it fosters and supports independent artists.

As part of CALLBACKseries2023, from February 16 to 26, Teatro Círculo will present Seis, by Federico Roca, a tribute to six transgender women murdered in Uruguay between 2012 and 2013. Of the six cases, only one has been resolved.

Seis, directed by Pablo Andrade, will be performed in Spanish with overtitles in English. In this staging, humor and prejudice serve to present the humanity of the victims. The cast, with María Fontanals, Yessi Hernández, Mauricio Martínez, and Mario Mattei, portray characters who answer the truth that each murder hides: we are all guilty.
In addition, on February 18 to 25, as part of DANCEseries2023, Teatro Círculo will bring for the first time the dance troupe Mexica Danza Folklórica, an emerging dance company in New York City whose mission is to highlight the rich diversity and history of Mexico through traditional Mexican Folklórico dances.

Mexica Danza Folklórica will present, directed by Raúl López, Así se baila en el norte, an authentic Folklórico production showcasing the regional polkas of Northern Mexico: “it is history turn into art”.

Así se baila en el norte follows the journey of a group of professional Folklórico dance couples in Northern Mexico as they compete for glory in various styles of polka. The show is divided into regional (make-believe) polka competitions, with the audience choosing their favorites.

Mexican Folklórico is among the oldest and most beloved traditions in Mexican culture – surviving centuries of change to remain relevant in modern times.
